Ahhh summer road trips. They will never go out of style! Seeing the country by car is the original slow travel and a great way to make memories! But, before you pack up the car and hit the road, make sure you have these 10 essentials on your next summer road trip packing list!
First Aid Kit- This is just the first rule of car safety in general, I always keep a small first aid kit under the passenger seat. But, road trips often mean you’ll find yourself on long stretches of highway with no signs of civilization and having a first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Or, save your shirt from getting bloody when you cut your finger while opening a soda can. It can happen!
Music- You can never have enough music on a road trip! Right now, Amazon Music is offering a free 30 day trial to its unlimited access plan. A week before your trip, sign up for the free trial, download to your hearts content and enjoy tons of music you’ll be able to access even without cell service!
As the wife of a pilot, the number one complaint I hear about when he is away is the hotel pillows! He jokes that they’re all the size of a postage stamp. Whether you plan on camping or staying in hotels, you’re sure to have room for a pillow in your car and you won’t regret it! These gel pillows are perfect for hot summer nights and car naps!
This has become my must have device for just about everything. Whether I’m traveling by car, plane or train, I do not leave home without my portable charger. I use my phone for everything these days and I can never keep up with all the tips and tricks to make my phone last so I’d rather take a battery and not have to worry about it! I’ve had great luck with any of the Anker brand batteries, but this one is my current favorite!
You’re going to be spending a lot of time in a car, this is not the place for skinny jeans- get comfy! There are so many great road trip themed shirts out there right now, it’s hard to pick just one to love! As someone who loves Mean Girls, I would definitely wear this shirt!
Accidents happen. I once hit a pothole so massive it not only shredded my tire but managed to dent my tire rim underneath! It was in that moment that I was thankful I had everything I needed to change a tire. I wasn’t even on a road trip when it happened but it has made me realize how much worse it could have been. Emergency kits are one of those things that you hope you never have to use it, but you’ll be thankful you have it when you do!
I can’t tell you how many downpours we got stuck in on our many road trips. When you have to stop to eat or take a bathroom break, there’s no telling what kind of weather you’ll be hitting in that moment. This ultra-compact one doesn’t take up much room and is quickly making its way up my list of must haves for any kind of traveling!
Hydration is key on long trips! Summer road trips means hot pavement and hot cars. Even if you’ve just run into a fast food place to use the restroom, your car sits out in the sun and bakes! I love my hydroflask for hot trips because it keeps my drinks cold for more than 24 hours. It’s amazing at the beach and even better in a hot car. My drink always runs out before the ice does!
When your water bottle runs dry, keep the cold ones coming by putting all your food and snacks in a cooler! This little guy is perfect for road trips as you can plug it in to your car outlet so you’ll never need to restock ice! It can hold cans or tall bottles and makes for a great arm rest/divider in a back seat when you have a full car or want to give kids their own space!
I don’t know about you but I tend to “move in” to a car on a road trip. I start out with a nicely packed bag but as the hours slip by, I slowly unpack my bag all over the car. When we reach our destination I spend way too much time packing my bag back up! Having a handy expandable tote bag is great for quickly getting all your stuff back in one place.
The classic road trip must have: SNACKS! As much as I’d love to plop down with chocolate covered raisins and a big bag of Cheetos, we’re trying to make an effort to eat healthier. Snacks are always where I struggle so I like to make sure I have plenty of options on hand from NatureBox. Their dried pineapple is the best I have ever had and they have lots of salty and sweet options depending on how you snack!
Summer road trips are a blast. Whether you’re working your way up the coast or making a stop at the world’s biggest ball of yarn, pack the right essentials and make your next road trip unforgettable!
